Assessing Learning to Promote Learning (Winter 2012)
Think of a time in your school career when you felt you were graded unfairly; and a time when a teacher reached out to you to help you get a better grade than you might otherwise have earned. How did each of these experiences affect your inner motivation? Your zest for learning? Your desire to achieve at a higher level?
Now, as an educator, how closely do your assessment practices align with your greatest goals for student learning? What would you like to learn about assessment in order to encourage greater responsibility and higher performance from your students?
UVEI's new Upper Valley Graduate School of Education is offering a multi-level course in Hopkinton, NH during the 2012 winter semester. It is devoted to enhancing assessment techniques and strategies for educators in SAU 66 schools. This course on assessment and grading has been custom-designed so that you select the level of investigation that matches the time and energy you are able to commit to this topic.
One-Credit: You attend six course sessions, do the readings, participate in discussions, and write a brief “assessment plan” for yourself to better align your curriculum and assessment practices.
Two-Credits: You do all of the above but also engage your students in an experience with alternative assessment, designed by you, and report back to the whole group on the results.
Three-Credits: In addition to the above, you are trained as an “Assessment Coach” to work with colleagues on their assessment innovations and in other ways assist in re-examining how assessment can best serve our individual, school-wide, and district goals for student learning.
It is also possible to attend the sessions on a non-credit basis (for Continuing Education hours).
You are invited to an “Open House” to find out more about this unique course on Thursday, Feb 2, at 3:15 at Hopkinton High School
