Mentors

The UVEI model differs from most university graduate programs in education. Believing that school leadership is an art best learned through practice, UVEI's principal internship has the intern work in the office of the principal under the supervision of an intern mentor who has been selected in concert with the intern and UVEI staff.

An important part of the admission process is selecting a compatible mentor for each intern.  While most principal interns choose to work with a mentor in the school district where they are already working, they may interview principals in other school or districts if they have the flexibility to consider placement in a school other than their own, with the aim of finding a mutually acceptable match.

Our mentors come from among the best professionals in the region and are supported by an intensive, personalized cohort experience, by professional workshops, readings and reflection.  During the 36-week program, principal interns assist their mentors on a daily basis.

"It's not enough to improve our schools - we need to transform them. This requires the kind of school leaders that UVEI is producing.."
