Admission and Application to UVEI

UVEI accepts applications throughout the year.  Orientation for the Class of 2013 will be held in August 2012.

Applicants to UVEI must have completed a bachelors degree in the arts or sciences.  Advanced degrees or career and life experience -- which may include volunteer work or raising a family -- are distinct advantages.  Most important, successful candidates must be committed to working with  young people.

Interested applicants are encouraged to review this site to learn as much about the special nature of the program as possible.  The directors will be happy to answer any of your questions, either by phone or by e-mail.

First steps:  The admission process normally begins with the submission of a completed application, a resume, four essays, and a non-refundable $40 fee.  Before an interview, we require:  official post-baccalaureate transcripts and three letters of recommendation.  (We understand that these items may arrive separately.)

The Interview:  Once a complete application has been received, along with supporting materials, UVEI staff will review the application and may invite the candidate for an interview.  At the time of the interview, an additional writing sample will be required.

Initial Acceptance:  If the candidate is initially accepted, she/he will receive a letter which details the process of finding a mentor and completing any recommended actions.

Full Acceptance:  When the candidate and a mentor teacher have agreed to work together, final acceptance occurs and will be confirmed in writiing.

Praxis Tests:  Interns applying for New Hampshire teacher certification in any endorsement area are required by the state to take the Praxis I Basic Skills Test.  All interns must submit scores for the Praxis I test before starting the UVEI program.  In some cases, GRE or other graduate admissions tests may be substituted for Praxis I.

Elementary and Secondary interns must also take a Praxis II content test in their subject areas.  We encourage interns to take Praxis II after they have entered the program and have spent a semester or more teaching their chosen content.

Praxis I scores must be on file before UVEI can recommend an intern for New Hampshire certification. The New Hampshire Department of Education will grant licensure upon successful completion of Praxis II in the intern’s content area.

The program begins in mid-August, with a week-long orientation.  Interns then report to their placement schools for the teacher in-service days leading up to the opening of the school year.

“My experience at UVEI was very beneficial. I was able to network with many different people. I’m still able to contact my mentor for advice and help.”
