Welcome to UVEI’s Research and Publications page!
What is this page all about? As a graduate school of education, UVEI seeks to contribute to the field of knowledge and provide educators with practical tools that can be used in their settings. We know that when educators can access and apply conceptual frameworks, new skills and knowledge, and tools for improvement to their settings, schools are more likely to provide improved student outcomes.
We present these resources in a few different categories.
- Knowledge Briefs: Knowledge briefs are an overview of the research-based literature and frameworks associated with specific topics in the field. Our knowledge briefs help educators access and synthesize many of the complex ideas associated with the endeavor of school, including distilling seminal research, including counter-narratives, and providing our expert guidance and perspectives moving forward.
- Conceptual Frameworks: These research-based frameworks represent the work of many prominent researchers in the field of education as well as frameworks designed by UVEI faculty on various topics, including (e.g.) leadership, how schools improve, and equity-centered deeper learning. Taken together, these frameworks can provide educators with a structured understanding of an observed phenomenon or defined problem of practice as a possible first step in taking action or deepening understanding.
- Design Research: Each year, our shared design research improvement efforts take place in the Barnes Initiative for Collaborative Learning. This work entails completing a year’s worth of designed improvement work within a specific topic. Barnes participants conduct a needs assessment across participating school sites in Vermont and New Hampshire, identify a common problem of practice across sites, design and prototype a solution to this problem, and then publish their findings. Our intent is to make what we learned through this work public and freely share our designs with others.
