Coherent and Aligned Instructional Guidance Systems: A Knowledge Brief (2023) by Adam Norwood, EdD, Monica Nachemja-Bunton, MS, and Page Tompkins, EdD In this knowledge brief, we delve into the complexities of instructional guidance systems, the challenges posed by loosely coupled education systems, the role of leadership in fostering coherence, and the nuances of effectively leading school improvement efforts. As we explore these themes, it becomes evident that successful educational leadership demands a delicate balance between honoring individual educators’ autonomy on the one hand and, on the other hand, fostering collaboration, alignment, and coherence among individual educators in the system.
Teaching to Learning Difference: A Knowledge Brief (2016) by Page Tompkins, EdD, and Chris Ward, PhD Both experience and common sense suggest that all individuals are unique and learn in ways that are particular to them. Research indicates that effective learning environments are responsive to these differences, both by building on the unique experiences and understandings that each student brings to a learning opportunity, and by continuously tailoring learning opportunities based on ongoing assessments of students’ progress across multiple dimensions of learning. We propose two ways of thinking about teaching to learning differences:
- What we call universal access refers to teachers’ work to support all students by designing and implementing equitable and inclusive learning environments.
- Personalization is an approach in which the teacher provides different learning activities and supports to individual students or subgroups of students in order to move all students to the same learning goals.
