Gather Information to Support Learning
Learn the foundations of formative assessment practices.
Assessment is the practice of gathering information on what students know and are able to do, both in order to foster their growth and success. In this inquiry, teachers will learn the foundations of effective formative assessment practices, such as identifying important learning goals, designing assessments that allow students to demonstrate a depth of understanding, analyzing student work in order to adjust instruction, and engaging students in meaningful feedback. Practicums for this learning strand include identifying learning outcomes, designing assessments, analyzing student work based on formative and a high quality summative assessment, and making inferences for future instruction. Performance assessments of competency include an analysis of student work aligned with outcomes and instruction, an analysis of assessment practices, and identifying next steps for instruction based on this analysis. Above and beyond these activities, you can elect to do an additional exploration of the research as it informs and improves your practice. You may also choose to participate in an additional clinical coaching cycle with conferencing and an observation to support further improvement and application.
