Backwards Planning, Forward Advancement
Empower the next generation of problem-solvers through units that immerse, engage, and instruct.
In this inquiry, teachers will learn principles for planning and teaching units of study that deeply engage students and advance their understanding. The Understanding by Design (UbD) approach to backwards planning (particularly unit planning) focuses on teaching for understanding. Practicum work includes planning a UbD unit including learning outcomes, assessments, and sequencing learning activities. The performance assessment is an aligned UbD unit that fosters understanding. As a prerequisite, participants must have previous experience with UVEI or faculty permission. Above and beyond these activities, you can elect to do an additional exploration of the research as it informs and improves your practice. You may also choose to participate in an additional clinical coaching cycle with conferencing and an observation to support further improvement and application.
