Each state typically requires a set of examinations for applicants for licensure. Here we outline the exams that are applicable for UVEI licensure program candidates.
Teacher Intern Program
New Hampshire’s required licensure exams are embedded in the program, as a requirement of either program admissions or program completion. These requirements apply to all candidates in the program, regardless of whether they are seeking NH licensure. For candidates seeking Vermont licensure, meeting these requirements also fulfills Vermont’s testing requirement.
For admissions, candidates must meet the “Basic Academic Skills Assessment (BASA) requirement. Choices include
- Pearson Essential Academic Skills Subtests I (005-Reading), II (006-Writing), and III (007-Math) … OR
- Praxis Core Subtests 5713 (Reading), 5723 (Writing), and 5733 (Math)… OR
- submitting scores, in the top 50th percentile, from other comparable standardized tests such as the SAT
For program completion, candidates must pass the required licensure exam(s) for the endorsement area(s) they have chosen. These include
- The applicable Pearson test OR Praxis test for each endorsement area
- All elementary teacher candidates also need to complete the Pearson 890 (Foundations of Reading) test
Principal Intern Program (and Curriculum & Assessment Specialization)
Vermont candidates, for the most part, are not required to pass any exams for licensure.*
New Hampshire candidates will need to take one or more licensure exams as follows.* These can be taken during or after the program, and do not impact your ability to complete the program.
- For all NH principal candidates: Pearson Tests 810 (Principal Subtest I) and 812 (Principal Subtest II)
- For all NH curriculum administrator candidates: Pearson Test 815 (Educational Leadership)
* Anyone who does not already hold a license in the state in which they are seeking licensure will also need to meet a “basic academic skills” testing requirement. This can be met by holding an out-of-state license, by taking the Pearson Essential Academic Skills subtests (NH) or the Praxis Core (VT), or by submitting qualifying scores from a comparable test such as the SAT.
