When planning this year’s Innovations in Education Forum, UVEI faculty considered the uncertainty surrounding education policy and funding that is a backdrop to our work this year. We reflected that while uncertainty is present, it does not define us. While uncertainty challenges us, it also provides meaning and importance to our work. This led us to reconsider some timeless questions. How are we showing up for our students, colleagues, and communities in authentic ways? How are we uncovering the joy of true, holistic learning – in our own lives and in those of our students?

With these questions in mind, we designed a panel discussion featuring two local school districts that are modeling authentic, holistic learning: Randolph Union High School’s Design Innovation Lab and Woodstock Union High School’s CRAFT Program. Through student-led design (Randolph) and community-based climate solutions and sustainability (Woodstock), the work in these schools brings students to a deep understanding of content and of how it is relevant to the world we live in. Educators and students commented on the transferable skills being learned, the desire to continue the work, and the hope this is instilling for the future.

In addition to the panel discussion, the Innovations Forum featured presentations from UVEI’s master’s degree candidates; discussions amongst alumni, mentors, and program candidates from various geographic regions; and expressions of gratitude for the work that we all do. It was a time of sharing – sharing our learning, sharing our practice, and sharing our questions. One alum pointed out a common sentiment that  “Now, I am ready to start the school year!”

How are we showing up for our students, colleagues, and communities in authentic ways? How are we uncovering the joy of true, holistic learning – in our own lives and in those of our students?

We’d like to continue the sharing that began at this forum and involve as much of our network of educators as possible. Take a look at what we have planned for the year and consider how you might get involved. Finally, please let us know of ways that you, or your school, are fostering holistic and authentic learning this year. We hope that you will share your examples via email to ptompkins@uvei.edu, or by completing this form.
